Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Chartres and its surroundings

Chartres is famous for its Gothic cathedral, which is largely acknowledged to be one of the most important and majestic in the country. UNESCO recognises it as a World Heritage Site, and it is simply not something you should miss. Nearby is the church of St. Pierre, which is also a magnificent sight of architectural beauty, and dates back to the 12th century. Both of them are located in the town’s ‘old city’ area, and it is a beautiful place to walk around and marvel at its fantastic preservation. If you’d prefer to see some art, then why not head to Chartres’ fine art museum, which houses some beautiful 16th and 17th century sculptures and paintings. Or alternatively, there is the excellent Centre International du Vitrail, which pays homage to the art of stained glass windows and the process of making them. For families with children, most of the big theme parks are near Paris; the Playmobil fun park, brimming with rides and toys, is 76km northeast of the hotel, or there is the charming France Miniature park 51km away, where you can see models of some of France’s most famous sights on a much smaller scale. Shopaholics should head to Chartres’ covered market, which is home to fantastic food and numerous souvenir stalls, and is situated just south of the Cathedral. However you choose to spend your time in Chartres, the Kyriad Chartres is a great place to stay to explore the beautiful town.
